FEAR OF MONEY

The first impulse reaction will likely be: "NO, I love money!"

Fear of money!

Sabrina is a hardworking single mom of two teenagers. In young adulthood she experienced hunger and waking up with snow on the blankets. She made a vow to herself to get out of the bad situation, and she did. Now she has her own business a house that is always warm and food on the table. Her experience of lacking the basic necessities; created for Sabrina the fear of abandonment by in this case money.

Sabrina is not the only one with the fear of abandonment by money, or that this is the only fear that money provoked in us. The fear of money comes in different shapes and forms:

  • Transparency of money: not knowing when it comes or where it is going.

  • Trust: it is there when you need it?

  • Inadequate: feelings of being unprepared dealing with money

  • Low self-esteem : not worthy of money

Money is like a shadow it follows us around and is involved in everything we think, say or do. It determines on how we live and how far we can follow our dreams. It can even decide what your social status is. Money is associated with power, the more money the more power. Since we can't get around money it very natural that we connect a fear to it.

Our view and relationship with money gets formed very early on in life. We often copy the money view from our parents. This includes the good, the bad and the fears. The way of saving or spending, even the way of investing, every aspect that involves money. Therefore our fear of money is not always easy to detect in ourselves, but when you observe your parents or siblings you can get a grip on what may be your money fear.

Handling money is a skill we can learn, but it is the mindset we have around money that determent how successful we will be in dealing with it. It is in the mindset where the fear has resident, and it is the mindset that feeds the fear. Many of us will dismiss that there is a fear lurking, however the kernel of doubt is there, and now the seed has a chance to grow. Looking at the mindset we currently have around money will create an opportunity to bring the fear into the open. By indentifing the fear we now have the power of choice; we can deal with the fear and create freedom or we let the fear rule our relationship with money.
