WHAT DID I LEARNED FROM MY FIRST "REAL" JOB?


“I heard that you have a job as a cashier, Cindy” said Joan. “Yes I do, this was the only thing that was available so i have to do for now. It is soo far from my dream job as an engineer, but at least I make money to go to university. ” replied Cindy.

How often don’t we look down at the first job we got, thinking if it wasn’t for the money we would waste our time. Secretly resenting the time that we had to spend on working and not be able to hang out with friends. If we can see that there is more to the job, then we are lucky and can learn more from it than we first thought.

Subconsciously we need others to learn , to learn about love we look at friends and family because we associate love with them. For Math and English we turn to the education system, the same counts for career skills.

To succeed in life we need way more skills than those taught in school. Therefore there is more to question “what did you learn from your first job?”,instead of ratteling off the employments recommendations be still and become curious of the answer. There can be a hidden gem buried somewhere. By answering the question you may discover something you never thought of before, for myself I discovered so much when I wrote my book : “Life is Great Even When it Sucks.” Will that happen to you? Maybe, maybe not but I bet you learned something you wouldn’t had learned easily somewhere else and definitely not in any school. Start thinking about things like:

  • Accepting feedback.

  • Listening to directions.

  • Customer service.

  • Responsible for actions.

  • Deliver to “their” standards.

There is not such a thing as a useless job, or thinking you can’t learn anything by doing “THAT” employment. To keep the work force turning ALL work is important, one is not better than another. Yes, companies need CEOs, but keep in mind that without the janitor the workplace would become unbearable. This is often overlooked and we look down on the person in the “lower” occupations and that is unfair because the “power people” can’t do their work without the back up from the rest of the personal. It doesn’t matter what your career is, you need to remember that we all use the washroom regardless!

It is therefore important for you when you go to work to bring the A-game to the table and a perspective of a learning attitude you never know you may learn something new, if it is not about the trades of the profession than hopefully it is something about yourself.
